Precautions for hand, foot, and mouth disease include practicing good hygiene like frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after coming into contact with potentially contaminated surfaces or bodily fluids. Avoiding close contact with infected individuals, disinfecting commonly touched surfaces, and maintaining a clean environment can help prevent the spread of the disease.
The incubation period for HFM disease, caused by the enterovirus, typically ranges from 3 to 7 days. During this period, an infected individual may not display any symptoms but can still transmit the virus to others. The incubation period can vary among individuals, and some cases may present with symptoms earlier or later than the typical timeframe.
The infectious period of hand, foot, and mouth disease usually lasts for about 1-2 weeks. During this time, the infected individual can spread the virus through direct contact with saliva, blister fluid, faeces, or respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.
In adults, the symptoms of the disease include fever, sore throat, painful oral sores, and a rash with blisters on the hands, feet, and sometimes buttocks. These symptoms vary in severity and may be accompanied by general malaise or body aches. It's important to note that adults may experience milder symptoms compared to children.
It is possible to contract HFM disease multiple times. The illness is caused by various strains of enteroviruses, and exposure to different strains can result in repeated infections. Additionally, the immune response to a previous infection may not provide lifelong protection against future infections.
