Overview
HPB cancers are easily the most challenging cancers to operate for any cancer surgeon. These are long and complex surgeries which require a high degree of skill and expertise. At the Nanavati Max institute of cancer care , the HPB cancer surgery program is led by Dr Ganesh Nagarajan who is a renowned expert known for his high volume of work in this challenging field. He and his team are a tertiary high volume referral centre for all liver and pancreatic cancers from all over India and abroad. A large number of liver cancers – both primary ( HCC) and secondary ( metastasis from other cancers ) are routinely treated with major resections including vascular reconstructions with results on par with international standards. The smaller lesions which are suitable for a laparoscopic or robotic resection are treated accordingly. Patients with colorectal and neuroendocrine liver metastasis are operated routinely with excellent long term outcomes. Supra Major resections for bile duct cancers( cholangiocarcinomas) . the interventional radiology team led by Dr anirudha kulkarni is an integral part of the team for ablations and liver directed therapies ( TACE and TARE) .
They also closely coordinate with the medical and radiation oncology teams for allied treatments
Pancreatic cancer surgery outcomes highly depend on the expertise of the surgeon and the results are much better in high volume centres. Dr Nagarajan and his team perform a high volume of cases for pancreatic cancer. They are ably supported by the interventional radiology teams and the gastroenterologist for pre surgery procedures. Dr Nagarajan and his team also routinely perform laparoscopic and robotic distal pancreatectomy.
