Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the common treatment options for gastrointestinal cancer?

Gastrointestinal cancer treatment depends on several factors, such as the type and stage of cancer. Common treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. In some cases, a combination of these treatments may be used to provide the best outcome for the patient.

2. How does surgery play a role in gastrointestinal cancer treatment?

Surgery is often a primary gastrointestinal cancer treatment, especially if the tumour is localised and has not spread to other parts of the body. The goal of surgery is to remove the tumour along with any affected surrounding tissue or nearby lymph nodes.

3. What is the role of chemotherapy in gastrointestinal cancer treatment?

Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells or slow down their growth. It can be administered before surgery (neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to shrink tumours, after surgery (adjuvant chemotherapy) to kill remaining cancer cells, or as the primary treatment for advanced or metastatic gastrointestinal cancer.

4. Are there targeted therapies available for gastrointestinal cancer treatment?

Yes, targeted therapies are a valuable option for some gastrointestinal cancers. These therapies are designed to target specific genetic mutations or proteins present in cancer cells, aiming to disrupt their growth and survival. Examples of targeted therapies include drugs that inhibit specific molecular pathways involved in cancer development or drugs that target specific receptors on cancer cells.

5. Can immunotherapy be used in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer?

Immunotherapy is an evolving treatment approach that harnesses the body's immune system to fight cancer. While it has shown success in treating certain types of cancer, its role in gastrointestinal cancer depends on the cancer type, stage, and specific tumour markers.
