The Kidney Transplant also termed Renal Transplant is a surgical procedure of replacing a diseased kidney with a healthy kidney, usually obtained from a donor. Generally, there are two types of donors:

  • Living Donor: Usually a healthy person has two kidneys and is ready to donate one of his kidneys to a patient suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
  • Deceased Donor: A person declared brain dead by more than two doctors. Both the kidneys of these patients can be used for transplantation in patients suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

With an aim to offer a successful kidney transplant in Mumbai, India we are committed to providing quality care to kidney donors. We perform Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy too in order to ensure that a donor experiences minimal pain and benefits from early recovery.

We at the unit offer various types of renal transplants:

  • Pre-emptive Kidney Transplant: Also termed as an early transplant, it is performed even before the patient starts showing symptoms of kidney failure.
  • Highly Sensitized Kidney Transplant: This type of transplant helps patients with a high level of antibodies. The process involves the removal of antibodies that target a donor’s kidney, thereby allowing the kidney to be transplanted safely.
  • ABO-incompatible Kidney Transplant: In this process, the transplant of the kidney takes place even when the donor's blood type and patient’s blood type is not compatible. In this process, a patient receives medical treatment before and after the process in order to avoid organ rejection.

Kidney transplant surgery is performed under the effect of anesthesia and usually takes around two to four hours. During the surgery, the doctor makes an incision in the patient’s abdomen and places the donor kidney inside the right iliac fossa. They then connect the veins and arteries coming from the heart to the new kidney in order to start the flow of blood and also attach the new kidney’s ureter to the bladder for the urination process. A doctor leaves the original kidney inside the patient’s body and is only removed if it is infectious or causing problems.

After the surgery, the patient is closely monitored round-the-clock by a team of Nephrologists & Urologists for signs of recovery in the ICU. After the discharge, the patient is advised to wear a mask, take immunosuppressants, and resume work after 6 weeks.
