Affecting nearly 5 million people globally, epilepsy is a neurological condition marked by uncontrolled seizures. The condition can progress over time, with the seizures becoming progressively worse. It is non-communicable, however, due to the lack of proper knowledge there are many taboos associated with it. People with epilepsy often have to lead a compromised life, especially in terms of social interaction. The condition cannot be cured, however, it can be effectively managed with timely care.

Epilepsy is broadly classified into two different types based on the origin of the seizures. These are:

  • Generalized seizures - These are said to happen when seizure activity involves the entire brain at the onset. These are further classified as absence seizures, tonic seizures, atonic seizures, clonic seizures, myoclonic seizures and tonic-clonic seizures.
  • Focal seizures - These are said to happen when a well-defined or localized part of the brain is involved at the beginning of the seizure. Later, this seizure may also spread over the entire brain. The symptoms tend to be more severe in this case.

Common symptoms of epilepsy include:

  • Unusual stiffness in the muscles
  • Staring or fainting spells
  • Involuntary jerking of the arms and legs
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Psychological symptoms like fear, anxiety and depression

The exact cause of epilepsy may not be known in all cases, however, there are certain factors that have been linked with it. These include:

  • Severe injury or trauma to the brain
  • High-grade fever
  • Having existing neurological conditions like dementia
  • Structural or functional brain deformities that may be congenital or acquired later
  • Prenatal trauma or exposure to harmful medications
  • Underlying medical conditions like AIDS
  • Having a stroke
  • Having a cyst or tumor in the brain

Treatment Options

Various treatment options available for patients with epilepsy include:

Anti-seizure medications

Also known as anti-epileptic medications, these help to reduce the intensity and frequency of seizures.

Surgery

Surgery is an option for patients who are not responding to medication. It involves the removal of the area of the brain that is responsible for causing seizures. It is recommended only if the area is well-defined and does not disrupt any vital function.

Vagus nerve stimulation

This involves the use of a special device known as a vagus nerve stimulator, which is surgically implanted in the patient’s chest. The wires of the stimulator are connected to the vagus nerve. The device works by delivering bursts of electrical signals to the vagus nerve. VNS surgery can help to significantly reduce or stop seizures, even if they are not controlled with medications.

Deep brain stimulation

The surgical procedure involves the placement of electrodes in certain areas of the brain and delivering electrical impulses using a pulse generator, which is implanted in the chest and connected to the electrodes using thin leads. This helps to stimulate the brain and restore the disrupted electrical conductivity of the brain.
